About Me

Tyla Squires-Smith

Hi there! I’m Tyla Squires-Smith. I am in my  3rd year of my Bachelor of Media and Communications (Marketing Communication) degree at the University of Canberra, attempting a major in Events & Tourism. I am passionate about bringing my ideas to life whether that is through a campaign or event execution.

Currently in my career, I am working as a Marketing Coordinator at Tile Republic. TR didn’t have someone in the role before me, meaning that I had the opportunity to create strategies, campaigns and more from the ground up. At the start I was overwhelmed as I had never had a role without a mentor/director and wasn’t too sure where to start. Fast track to today and I am more than comfortable in my role, as I had the opportunity to create my own way of doing things, I gained the abilities to be adaptable and proactive.  My work consists of website handling, including uploading content like products and blogs. As well as processing online orders and sample orders. I am also responsible for all social media channels including their reporting, monitoring and strategies.

I got this role by being referred from my employer at the time, the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. I had previously interned for the Academy as a Media Marketing intern working on their newly established Seriously Social podcast. At the commencement of my internship they asked to extend my hours before offering me a casual role to continue my work.

In my profession, I am most passionate about events and photography. I have always had a love for photography all through high school and university I took photography classes and units. In my role I use this skill in creating flat lays and photographing recently renovated spaces that use our products. My love for events is something I have always had but it was only magnified after I did an internship with Danielle Cleary Events. We organised events like the Canberra Fair,  the DCE Model Host Search and various photoshoots. I loved working as a part of a team and being able to bring a concept to life. Throughout this internship I learnt of all the aspects that go into planning large scale events and the best tactics for doing so.

My biggest professional accomplishment would be when I was one of two chosen to extend my internship at the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and then out of the two of us I was given the casual position. This gave me confidence in my work and my abilities.
